Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA), also known as PVOH or PVAL, is a synthetic, water-soluble polymer that has gained significant attention across various industries due to its unique properties and versatility. Derived primarily through the hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate, PVA exhibits excellent film-forming capabilities, high tensile strength, flexibility, and good chemical resistance, making it an indispensable material in numerous applications. The production of PVA involves the polymerization of vinyl acetate monomers, followed by a controlled hydrolysis process. The degree of hydrolysis can vary, typically ranging from 87% to 99%, influencing the polymer’s solubility, strength, and other characteristics. Fully hydrolyzed PVA (around 99%) is less soluble in cold water but exhibits higher crystallinity and tensile strength, while partially hydrolyzed variants are more soluble and flexible.
